Harry Monroe Thomas, 81 of Russell died Wednesday evening, June 8, 2011 at his home with his family by his side.
Harry was born February 8, 1930 on the family farm near Mountain Grove, Missouri, the son of Leonard Monroe and Dora (Hart) Thomas. He grew up in Mountain Grove and graduated from Mountain Grove High School.
Harry made a career in serving his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was a Flight Engineer for the C-130 Hercules. He served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired from the military in 1975 and returned to Rooks County. Harry then took up farming in the Rooks and Russell Counties.
Harry was united in marriage to Barbara Ellen Zigler on August 20, 1954 in Russell. This union was blessed with two sons, Dennis and Randall. Barbara preceded him in death in October of 2000.
Harry was a member of the Russell V.F.W. Post 6240 and the Russell Masonic Lodge. He loved traveling and motorcycles..
Surviving family include two sons, Dennis Ray Thomas and wife Laura of Russell, Kansas and Randall Wayne Thomas of Bossier City, Louisiana; three brothers, Howard Thomas of Springfield, Missouri, Harold Thomas of Phoenix, Arizona and Charles Thomas of Mountain Grove, Missouri; sister Louise Idleman of Port Charlotte, Florida; and four grandchildren, Joshua, Sarah, Jason and Anastasia “Annie”. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Verba Long, and daughter-in-law Darlene Thomas.
Celebration of Harry’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary Chapel in Russell, Kansas. Friends may sign the book from 9 AM to 5 PM Monday at the mortuary. Cremation has preceded the services. A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions and condolences may be left in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
