Mr. David J. Wheeler Sr, (USAF Retired), 76, passed away in his sleep on October 10, 2011, surrounded by loving family and close friends.
He was born on February 5, 1935 in Antwerp, New York. His wife Eileen preceded David in death; He is survived by his four children; three sons, Ronald (Robin) Wheeler, Larry (Janelle) Harbaugh; and David Jr. (Rose) Wheeler; 1 daughter, Rita (Gary) Covington; 2 brothers, Paul Donald Wheeler and Stanley Wheeler; 9 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
David served in the Air Force 1953-1976 as an Administrative Clerk and ultimately as a Pararescueman (PJ) during his long distinguished military career, he was awarded the Silver Star for Valor against an opposing force, Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism, 10 Air Medals, and many other distinguished awards. David was a Pararescueman whose skills knew no boundaries, whose warm personality knew no strangers, and whose service to his country will be long remembered. Yet another reminder, Freedom is not free. As an expression of sympathy, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or a charity of the donorís choice, in honor of David Wheeler.
A graveside memorial service to celebrate Davidís life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Bunker Hill Cemetery in Bunker Hill, Kansas with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Cremation has preceded the service and inurnment of the cremains will follow the service. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the memorial service.
