Viola May Rothgeb, 97, of Russell, died on July 15, 2008 at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell. She was born on August 17, 1910 in New Albany, Kansas, the daughter of James W. and Anna (Nelson) Eaton.
Viola grew up and attended school in the New Albany area. Later she met and fell in love with Ray D. Rothgeb and they were united in marriage on August 4, 1935 in Fredonia, Kansas. From this union Viola and Ray were blessed with a daughter they named Sheila and in 1943 they moved from Nebraska to Russell. Ray preceded her in death on May 21, 1981. Viola was a homemaker for most of her life but for 15 years she worked as a cook in the Dietary Department at the Russell Hospital. She was a long time active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell and the Order of The Eastern Star. She enjoyed doing needle work, flower gardening and cooking. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving family include her daughter Sheila Mills and husband Joe of Manhattan, Kansas, granddaughter Kirsten Wilkinson and husband Ivan, grandson Toby Mills and fiancé Trish Olson, great grandsons Drew and Ryan Wilkinson.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother Earl Eaton and a sister Pearl Jordan.
A graveside celebration of Viola’s life is scheduled for 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell with Pastor Terry McGuire of the Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will take place after the service at the cemetery. The casket will be closed and there will be no viewing or visitation.
