Akemi Barton, 70, of Overland Park, died on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center.
Akemi was born on November 6, 1938 in Omuta, Japan, the daughter of Sadakuma and Yasuke Honda. She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Darrell Barton on September 26, 1961 in Fukuoka, Japan. From this union Akemi and Darrell were blessed with two children a son Daniel and a daughter Raelene. She was a member of the Methodist Church, V.F.W. #846 Auxiliary, and American Legion Auxiliary #327 both of the Kansas City area. She enjoyed being a homemaker and spending her time caring for her family and friends.
Surviving family include her husband Darrell of the home, son Daniel Barton and wife Gayle of Blue Ridge, GA; daughter Raelene Herndon and husband Bob of Overland Park, KS, and 4 grandchildren. She also has 3 sisters and one brother of Japan.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Her father died serving in Iwo Jima during World War II, and her mother died in 1946 from the after-affects of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
A celebration of Akemi’s life will be held at 10 AM on Monday, October 26, 2009 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 7 PM on Friday, October 23, 2009 at the D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel at 8201 Metcalf Ave. Visitation in Russell will take place the day of the service.
