Jack A. Yost

Jack Alois Yost, 78, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at his home.

Jack was born April 15, 1948, in Russell. He was one of five children born to Alois J. “Lum” and Florence (Jacobs) Yost. He lived in the Fairport area for the first 11 years of his life and attended Fairport Grade School, where he completed six grades in just five years because he would otherwise have been the school’s only fifth-grade student. In 1959, his family moved to a farm east of Gorham, Kansas and he completed his grade school years at St. Mary’s Catholic School. In 1964, they moved into the town of Gorham where he attended Gorham High School and graduated in the class of ’65. He was a four-sport athlete in high school playing football, basketball, baseball and track. After high school, he played softball, a sport in which he excelled in. He won numerous awards including Hays League MVP and MVP at several other tournaments. He also played on the State Championship team sponsored by Farmers National Bank of Victoria.

Jack met, fell in love, and was united in marriage to Gina Schmidt on March 12, 1993, in Las Vegas, Neveda. With this marriage, Jack became a father to Jessica and they made their home in Russell.

Jack began his career in the oil field at an early age, driving tank trucks at the age of 16. He also worked for many local farmers hauling bails and shocking feed. After high school he worked for several oil field companies including General Roustabout and Home Stake Production Company. Jack owned and co-owned several businesses including the Barn Lounge in Gorham, Russell Tank and Equipment, Yost Oil Operations, I-70 Phillips 66 Service Station, Fossil Creek Sporting Clays, JAG Operations, Inc. and Jack’s Seasonings, LLC. Jack and Gina developed J&J Seasoning, named after himself and his daughter Jessice which later became Jack’s Gourmet Seasoning and is still being sold across the United States. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Gorham Knights of Columbus, Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Auxiliary and the Russell American Legion Post #99 Auxiliary. He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan, being a season ticket holder since 1991, enjoyed playing cards, especially Texas Holdem, shooting sporting clays, traveling with Gina and cooking and entertaining his family and friends. Making the Chiefs tailgate parties and local parties memorable. Jack lived life to the fullest and enjoyed every moment spent with family, friends, and those around him. He genuinely cared about people and had an extraordinary ability to remember faces and names, rarely forgetting either.

Jack’s surviving family include his wife of 33 years, Gina of the home; daughter, Jessica Davis (Ashley) of Enid, Oklahoma; brother, Chuck Yost (Terri) of Gorham, Kansas; sister, Marcia Blundon (Glen) of Russell, Kansas; and two grandchildren, Tristan Sudlow and Willow Sudlow of Enid, Oklahoma, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard Yost and Doug Yost; and nephew Bradley Yost.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church of Gorham, Kansas, with burial of ashes following at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Gorham. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to start of Vigil, Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. Vigil will be held at 7:00 PM followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with the RHS Trap Shooting Team.
