James Anthony Mermis

James Anthony Mermis, 81, of Gorham, Kansas, passed away Friday, July 3, 2026, at his home with his family by his side.

Jim was born January 3, 1945, in Hays, Kansas. He was the son of Tony and Julia Nonney(Coady) Mermis. He grew up in Gorham and graduated from Gorham High School.

Jim was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Zirkle on October 9, 1961 in Houston, Texas. This union was blessed with children; Michael D, Cathy, Cynthia, Kimberly, Paul and Michael A. They made their home in Houston for 53 years before moving back to Gorham. Barbara preceded him in death on February 25, 2013. Later he had a wonderful relationship with Roberta Hupfer.

Jim was an Owner and Operator of a small appliance repair and vacuum cleaner Store. Jim was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Gorham and the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. He enjoyed hunting and messing with motorcycles.

Jim’s surviving family include his daughters, Cynthia Mermis of Gorham, Kansas, and Kimberly Farrar (Jared) of Russell, Kansas; sons, Paul Mermis of Waller, Texas, and Michael Mermis (Sherrie) of Waller, Texas; fiancé, Roberta Hupfer of the home; brother, Steve Mermis of Russell, Kansas; stepdaughters, Theresa Dix and Alleda Hupfer; 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara; daughter, Cathy Louvier; son, Michael D. Mermis; and brother, Robert Mermis.

Celebration of James’ Life will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, July 23, 2026 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Gorham. No visitation being held. Condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
