Marty H. Myers

Martin H. "Marty" Myers, the longtime owner of Myers Furniture in downtown Russell, passed away on March 20, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on January 16, 1946, Marty was a cornerstone of the local business community for decades.

He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in 1964. He then attended Ft. Hays Kansas State College where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business.

Marty was best known for his commitment to Myers Furniture, a landmark in “Beautiful Downtown Russell” for over 74 years. Under his leadership, the store became more than just a business; it was a gathering place where he built lasting friendships with customers and provided many local high school students with their first jobs. He took great pride in serving Russell and the surrounding communities, frequently expressing his deep gratitude for the support the area showed his family’s business throughout its long history.

He was a staple of Russell, and was very active in many community activities. He was a member of the Russell Elks Lodge, the Russell Lions Club, the Russell Kiwanis Club, Russell Rotary, Russell Chamber of Commerce, Russell Main Street and the Jaycees. He enjoyed art, making jewelry and attending stone shows, and coin collecting.

Even as he approached retirement, his thoughts remained with the future of his town, as he hoped to see a new generation of entrepreneurs continue the tradition of local commerce in Russell.

He is survived by his siblings: his sister Mary Myers and her wife Jyoti DeVernie; his sister Gatha (Williams) Hammond and her husband Steve; his brother Ronald “Ron” Myers and his wife Judith “Judy”; and his Niece Ann Myers and her husband Josh Stortz. Marty was preceded in death by his parents Charles S. and Letha B. (Sellens) Myers.

Marty’s legacy lives on in the homes and memories of the countless friends and neighbors he served throughout his life.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, March 26, 2026 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Celebration of Marty’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, March 27, 2026, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.
