Norman Paul Nuss, 82, of Overland Park, Kansas, died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at Tallgrass Creek Senior Living. He was a former resident of Russell and Manhattan, Kansas.
Norman was born on October 20, 1943, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Paul and Rachel (Popp) Nuss. He grew up on the family farm near Milberger, Kansas, and graduated from Russell High School in 1961. Norman graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and later achieved his Master’s Degree in Counseling from Fort Hays State University. He was united in marriage to Nettie Romilda (Ro) Reitzel on June 7, 1964, in Russell. From this union, Norman and Ro were blessed with two children, Tonja and Kurt. He worked in education, teaching and coaching in Dodge City and La Crosse, Kansas, and eventually moved his family back to Russell in 1978 to manage the family farm. In the mid-1980s, he returned to teaching and coaching for USD #407 in Russell and retired as the USD #407 Athletic Director in 2005. After over 40 years in education, he refocused his attention to managing the family farm, traveling, and golfing with his buddies. He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. He loved watching and supporting K-State football and other university athletic teams, in addition to being a dedicated Kansas City Royals baseball fan. But most of all, he enjoyed being with family and going to his children and grandchildren’s sporting events.
Surviving family include his wife Ro Nuss of Overland Park, daughter Tonja Stelly (Ken) of Houston, Texas, son Kurt Nuss (Theresa) of Leawood, Kansas, sister Wilmetta Deutsch of Hutchinson, Kansas, grandchildren Tyler Myers, Quentin Grimes, Allaire Nuss, Maggie Nuss, and Carolyn Nuss; and great-grandchildren Tristan, Skylar, and Tatum Myers. He was predeceased by his parents.
Cremation has been selected by the family. A memorial service to celebrate Norman’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. A private family inurnment will follow at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 7 P.M. on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the mortuary. The family will greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Wednesday evening. Memorials may be given to the Russell High School Athletic Department in his name and sent to the mortuary.
