Roy Franklin Lange, 77, of Bunker Hill, Kansas, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2025 at the Russell Regional Hospital.
Roy was born November 20, 1947 in Russell, Kansas. He was one of four children to Frank and Alma (Frick) Lange. He grew up on a farm north of Bunker Hill. At the age of 6, Roy’s family moved into Bunker Hill where he attended school. He graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1965. He then attended Pratt Junior College from 1966 to 1967.
Roy served his country in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969. He was stationed in Vietnam during the conflict from 1968 to 1969.
Roy was married to Sheila Strait on July 11, 1970. They made their home in Kensley, Kansas, where Roy worked at the Feed Lot. Later they divorced. He then worked for a Rancher in Clyde, Kansas until he was married to Judy Nolte. They made their home in Great Bend, Kansas. After they divorced, he lived in Russell for awhile before moving back to Bunker Hill.
Roy has had a love of horses his whole life. He trained horses for competitions and has won many belt buckles over the years. He was proud of his military service and was honored to have taken the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. and laid a wreath at the Vietnam Memorial.
Roy’s surviving family include his sister, Verna Hutchings; nephew, Tim Hutchings (Laurie), Troy Hutchings (Dayna); niece, Traci Viljanmaa (Klaus); great nieces, Finley Viljanmaa, Taylor Maule, Drew Maule Tipton (Garrett); great-great niece, Lennon Tipton; great niece Marissa Hastreiter (Cameron), great nephew Aidan Hutchings, and his beloved horse RJ (Roy Junior).
Roy was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Lange; and sister, Gladys Baird; infant sister, Joyce Lange; brothers-in-law, Bill Baird and Gerald Hutchings.
Celebration of Roy’s Life will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. Burial of ashes will follow at a later date. A Memorial has been established with the Kansas Honor Flight. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these services.
