Bobby L. “B.L.” Schulz

Bobby Lee “B.L.” Schulz, 97, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, February 4, 2022 at the Brookdale Senior Living in Hays, Kansas.

B.L. was born July 29, 1924 in Greensburg, Kansas.  The son of Robert Emmet and Fanny Maude (Hunsley) Schulz.  He grew up in Greensburg and graduated from Greensburg High School, where he lettered in all sports and music.  He played on the 41/42 Kansas University Jayhawks basketball team and pledged Kappa Sigma. He maintained lifelong ties with friends he made that year. He then served his country in the U.S. Army.  During World War II, he was stationed in Europe with the Grave Registration unit.  B.L. received medical training and his Bachelors degree while on active duty at Washington-Jefferson College in Pennsylvania. While there he continued playing basketball and participated in the NIT Tournament before shipping overseas. He was stationed in England before being sent to a hospital in France and later being assigned to Graves Registration in France and Luxembourg. While in Luxembourg, he oversaw the burial of Gen. George  S. Patton. When he returned to the United States, he used the G.I. Bill to attend the University of Kansas City Dental School graduating with a degree in Dentistry. His Father and Uncle were also alumni of the school.

B.L. was united in marriage to Lorraine “Larri” Lewis on April 8, 1951 at his parent’s home in Greensburg.  This union was blessed with four children; Don, Diane, Dean, and Dana.  They made their home in Russell, Kansas, where he practiced dentistry for over forty years.  He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Russell, a life member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240, the Russell American Legion Post #99, 75-year member of the Russell Masonic Lodge #177, Isis Shrine, Russell Elks Lodge, and Russell Kiwanis Club.  He also was active in the Arbor Foundation and the Russell Tree Board. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, snow skiing, and singing in his leisure time.

B.L.’s surviving family includes his daughter, Diane Schulz of Washington, D.C.; two sons, R.Dean Schulz (Sue) of Hays, Kansas and Dana Schulz (Barbara) of Cody, Wyoming; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

B.L. was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife Lorraine on March 13, 2014; son Don Schulz; three brothers, Vern Dean Schulz, Billy Gene Schulz, and an infant brother Robert. Memorial Services will be held at 2 P.M. on Friday, March 25, 2022 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.  Cremation has taken place and services will conclude at the mortuary.  Military rites will be performed by the Russell V.F.W. Post 6240.  Condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

A celebration of B.L.’s life will be held at 2 P.M. on Friday, March 25, 2022, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas.  Family will greet guests the day of the service.  Cards and condolences may be sent to the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
