Christopher Lee “Chris” Weigel, 57, of Gorham, Kansas, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2022 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.
Chris was born October 22, 1964 in Russell, Kansas, the son of Cecil & Ruth (Dreiling) Weigel. He grew up and attended schools in Gorham. He graduated from Gorham High School and then attended classes at Barton County Community College, where he was a member of the BCCC baseball team.
Chris was united in marriage to Donna Hammersmith on February 25, 1984 in Gorham. This union was blessed with two children: Cassandra and Justin. They made their home in Gorham.
Chris spent his life in the Gorham area, grew up working on the family farm, and multiple jobs in the oil and gas and manufacturing business. He served on the Gorham City Council, Gorham Fire Department and St. Mary’s Church Council. He was a member of the Gorham Community Development Association and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Gorham and was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. In his free time he really enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing baseball and watching sports, and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He especially enjoyed watching all their activities.
Chris’ surviving family include his wife of 37 years, Donna of the home; daughter, Cassandra Dinkel (Jesse) of Russell, Kansas; son, Justin Weigel (Annie) of Gorham, Kansas; parents, Cecil and Ruth Weigel of Gorham, Kansas; three sisters, Tonya Murphy (Mike) of Gorham, Kansas, Jackie Jaimez (Shawn) of Lawrence, Kansas and April Basgall (Brad) of Hays, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Gracelynn, Braigan, Nyliah, Aubree, Bryker, Brailey and Kipton.
Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, January 14, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gorham. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Gorham. Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM, Thursday, January 13, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Thursday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. A Memorial has been established with GCDA Park or Junior Broncos Football.
