Dorothy J. Nielsen

Dorothy Jane Nielsen, 80, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas. 

Dorothy was born on February 18, 1941, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Herman and Ella (Wasemiller) Steinert.  She grew up in Russell, Kansas and graduated from Russell High School and lived in Russell most all her life.  She was united in marriage (1958) to Gerald Nuss and from this union they had 2 children Debbie (Nuss) Overstake and Karl Henson, and 1 granddaughter Shalane (Overstake) Vavasseur.  They later divorced and Dorothy married Rod Deines in October,1966, and from this union they were blessed with 2 children Bonny and Mike.  Later Rod and Dorothy were divorced.  Dorothy found love a 3rd time and was united in marriage to Bill Nielsen in June 1986.  She worked as a homemaker for many years before working as a desk clerk for the Super 8 Motel in Russell, Kansas, and the Fairfield Inn in Hays, Kansas.  She was a former member of the Trinity United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir and Methodist Women’s Group.  She enjoyed tulips and flowers and scrap booking.  Most of all she enjoyed spending quality time with her family and close friends.

Surviving family include her daughter Bonny Deines and spouse Tim Ball of Lawrence, Kansas; son Mike Deines and wife Wendy of Basehor, Kansas; daughter Debbie Overstake and spouse Perry; granddaughter Shalane Vavasseur and spouse Brad, and Karl Henson.  She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Bill Nielsen on March 31, 1992.

A gathering service to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Monday, October 04 2021, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. The family will be present at the mortuary from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. to greet guests.  Cremation has been selected by the family and a private burial will be held by the family.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
