Shirley A. Krug

Shirley Ann (Stephens) Krug, 84, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2022 at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.

Shirley was born March 7, 1938 in Russell, Kansas.  She was the youngest of five children born to John Thomas and Grace Belle (McAllister) Stephens.  She grew up in the Hornview area in northern Russell County and attended country schools.  She graduated from Russell High School.

Shirley was united in marriage to Ronald Harold Krug on June 1, 1958 in Russell.  This union was blessed with three children; Stephanie, Steven and Randy.  They made their home on a farm in southern Russell County.  Ron preceded her in death on January 26, 2018.

Shirley was a devoted wife and homemaker.  She worked as a sales clerk for CR Anthony’s then worked for Russell State Bank / UMB Bank for over seventeen years before retiring.  She was an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church.  She was a proud member of the Russell Hospital Auxiliary and cooked for many soup suppers.  She also worked as an election board worker for many years.  As a child she was a member of 4-H and later became a 4-H Leader when her children had joined.  She enjoyed reading, playing piano, baking (especially her banana bars) and doing crafts with the Hospital Auxiliary.  She took great pride in hosting family gatherings.

Shirley’s surviving family include her daughter, Stephanie Hutchinson (Randy) of Falun, Kansas; two sons, Steven Krug (Connie) of Russell, Kansas and Randy Krug (Cathy) of Salina, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Krystle Roe, Audrey Lofland, Katlynn Krug-Richart, Samuel Krug, Michael Krug, Cole Hutchinson, Tyson Hutchinson and Cade Hutchinson; and10 great grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ron; brother, Neal Stephens; sisters, Nenah Belle Bachar-Hummel, Vivian Brandenburg and Faith Steponick-Billings; and great grandchild, Fayelle Hutchinson. Celebration of Shirley’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.  Burial will follow at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell.  Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  A Memorial has been established with the Russell Hospital Auxiliary.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
