He was raised in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in 1958.  Shortly after graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps. His overseas duty assignments included Okinawa, Japan. DaNang Vietnam and Subic Bay, Philippines.  While stationed in Japan he met, fell in love with and married Akemi (Kim) Honda on September 26, 1961 in Fukuoka, Japan. From this union Darrell & Kim were blessed with two children, a son, Dan, and a daughter, Raelene.

Darrell served his country honorably in the Marine Corps for 20 years and while he had a few overseas assignments, he was fortunate to spend most of his career in the Kansas City area. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he spent several years in the trucking industry as well as owning his own business. He was a member of the local V.F.W. and the American Legion. He enjoyed watching his Kansas City Royals and Chiefs as well as the Kansas Jayhawks. If there was a Chiefs or Royals game on, he was watching it.

Surviving family include his son Dan and daughter-in-law Gayle of Cumming, Georgia; his daughter Raelene and son-in-law Bob Herndon of Overland Park, Kansas; and his grandchildren Emily, Matthew, Katie and Nick. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kim, his parents and sister, LaVonne Buehler.
