Gordon R. Garrett

Gordon R. Garrett, 67, of Russell, Kansas, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 13, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas.

Gordon was born March 23, 1955 in Ellsworth, Kansas.  He was the son of Duane A. and Joan L. (Kaufman) Garrett.  He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of 1973.  Gordon only missed one day of school from K – 12.  He then attended Colby Junior College where he played baseball and then attended Ft. Hays State University where he obtained a Bachelor degree in Athletic Training.  He then obtained a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois.  After school he moved to San Antonio where he remained to his passing.

Gordon was an Athletic Trainer/Teacher at Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio for over 35 years.

Gordon was united in marriage to Elsa Trevino.  They made their home in San Antonio.  He enjoyed motorcycle riding, helping friends and being involved with sports.  He was an inspiration and touched many lives not only in the school district, but in everyone he met.  He was a man of true grit, spirit, love and great determination.  Gordon was injured in a motorcycle accident while returning home from school in April, 2017.  He was left paralyzed and spent many months in rehabilitation centers where he was an inspiration to patients and staff.

Gordon’s surviving family include his wife Elsa Garrett of the home; children, Kristin Schulte of Winfield, Alabama, Justin Garrett (Mandi) of San Diego, California and Jordan Garrett of San Antonio, Texas; step children, Jessica Morales (Jose) and Joshua Coronado (Megan); mother, Joan Weigel (Fred) of Russell, Kansas; brothers, Blaine Garrett (Janet) of Castle Rock, Colorado: sister, Diann Goodyear (Kenneth) of Manhattan, Kansas; step brother, Leon Weigel of Russell, Kansas; six grandchildren, Logan, Porter, Lexen, Sofia, Catalina and Julian.

Gordon was preceded in death by his father, Duane Garrett; grandparents, George and Eva Kaufman and Adam and Chloie Garrett.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 17, 2022 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.  Burial of Ashes will follow at the Dorrance City Cemetery.  A Memorial has been established with Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
