John E. Simmons, Jr.

John E. Simmons, Jr., 78, of Russell, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, January 04, 2024, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

John “Truck” Simmons was born on August 01, 1945, in Russell, Kansas, the son of John E., Sr. and Helen S. (Simacek) Simmons.  He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School where he excelled in basketball.  After high school, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Ft. Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.  He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Reynolds on March 29, 1983, in Russell and were married for 40 years.  From this union, John gained three bonus children Terrie, Carrie and Robert.  As a young man, he worked in the oilfield industry for several years before going back to construction.  Being a skilled carpenter and taking pride in his work, he continued his father’s business and strived to make the Simmons name respected. He passed his skills and knowledge on to anyone that wanted to learn, including many of his grandsons.

He enjoyed carpentry, construction, roofing, BBQs, and having a drink in the garage with the crew.  His great joy in life were his grandchildren: Victoria, Jeffery, Travis, Lisa, Chris, Devin, Anthony, Teri, Miko, Dalton, Alec, Karli, Hannah, Kane, Belinda, Amanda, Annetta, Nichole, Matthew, Johnie, and Kristopher. John went above and beyond for his loved ones. He was loved and will be missed by all.

Surviving family include his daughters, Terrie Ploutz (Jeff) of Russell, Kansas and Carrie Ferry (Tim) of Osmond, Nebraska; son, Robert Reynolds of Pierce, Nebraska; 21 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren, friends, and a large adopted family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Glenn E. and Keith Simmons and sister Leona Haney. His wife, Liz, passed away three weeks before him.

A Memorial Service will be held by the family at a later date.  Cremation has taken place.  Condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
