Virginia A. Mitchell

Virginia Ann (Hill) Mitchell, 79, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away Friday, March 25, 2022 at her home.

Virginia was born September 23, 1942 on the family farm in Lincoln County, Kansas.  She was the daughter of Harvey H. and Alice M. (Kral) Hill.  She grew up in the Dorrance and Wilson area and graduated from Dorrance High School.

Virginia was united in marriage to Fredrick O. Mitchell, Sr. on January 29, 1961 in Russell.  This union was blessed with three sons; Fredrick, Jr., Martin and Jason.  They moved around some early in their marriage before moving to Great Bend in 1972.  Fredrick preceded her in death on September 19, 2019.

Virginia was a devoted wife and homemaker for her sons.  She was an active member in the First Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend and also taught Sunday school classes.  She loved gardening, canning and cooking.  She always had a love for cats.

Virginia’s surviving family include her two sons, Fredrick Mitchell, Jr. of Great Bend, Kansas and Martin Mitchell (Kathey) of Great Bend, Kansas; brother, Mark Hill (Debra) of Wilson, Kansas; sisters, Patricia Schnur (Bob) of Butler, Pennsylvania, Bonita Buehler of Russell, Kansas and Terry Soukup (Jerry) of Wilson, Kansas; three grandchildren, Trinity Mitchell, Ashley Stanley and Chelsea Morris (Levi); and four great grandchildren, Charlotte Stanley, Peter Stanley, Claire Stanley and Warren Morris.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fredrick, son Jason John Mitchell and brother Roger Hill, and grandson-in-law Thomas Stanley

Celebration of Virginia’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, March 31, 2022 at the First Church of the Nazarene of Great Bend.  A Graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell.  The family will be present to greet friends from 9:30 AM to Service time Thursday at the Church.  A Memorial has been established with Golden Belt Humane Society.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, who is in charge of these arrangements.
