James “Jim” Kenneth Madsen, 66, of Russell, Kansas, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 31, 2020, at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas. Jim was born on September 15, 1953, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Kenny and Louise (Rogers) Madsen.  He grew up on the family farm in West Branch, Iowa and attended high school there.  Jim graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Business.  He was united in marriage to Katrin Kolder, DVM on September 1, 1990 in West Branch, Iowa.  They divorced in 2013, but continued to breed Red Angus cattle and raise

Gil Carreiro Chambray, 79, of Natoma, Kansas, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2020, at the age of 79. He was born on October 14, 1940 in the city of Arrifes, St. Miguel, Acores, Portugal.  He was the fifth child born to Maria Moniz and Antonio Carriero.  Gil moved from the Acores to Bermuda in 1949.  He attended school for a short time only as most Portuguese boys were sent to work at a very young age.  He worked at a rock quarry cutting slate stone from the ages of 11 – 17.  He then apprenticed at the Bermuda Electric

Judith (Letsch) Echer, 70, of Bunker Hill, Kansas, passed away Friday, January 24, 2020 at Main Street Manor in Russell, Kansas. Judith was born July 20, 1949 in Russell.  She was one of four daughters born to Don L. and Isabel (Duvall) Letsch.  Judith grew up in Bunker Hill and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of ’67.  She lived and worked in Wichita for twenty years before returning to the Bunker Hill community. Goldie was born on January 19, 1971, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Averill and Mary (Gooden) Dewey.  She grew up in Natoma, Kansas, and graduated from Natoma High School and attended Ft. Ann Loree (King) Meyer, 70 of Russell, Kansas, passed away on her birthday, Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.  Ann was born January 15, 1950 in Enid, Oklahoma, the daughter of Frank Claude and Muriel Louise (Crouse) King.  Ann always enjoyed meeting new people, a skill that came in handy as she lived in 5 different oilfield towns in Oklahoma and Kansas during her grade school years. Irene Mae (Zeigler) Luhman, 92, of Hays, Kansas, and formerly of Natoma, Kansas, departed this life and went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at the Hays Medical Center. Irene was born on November 17, 1927 on the family farm near Codell, Kansas.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Natoma.  She graduated from high school in Natoma in 1945.  She then attended Cadet Nursing Training at Salina, Kansas.  Suffering from polio, she did not return to nurses training. Ethelyn L. Grow, 71 of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2020 at the Mitchell County Special Care Unit in Beloit, Kansas. Ethelyn was born in Garden City, Kansas on November 14, 1948.  She grew up in Garden City and attended Garden City High School. Ethelyn had disabilities that limited her most of her life, but she tried to make the most of it.  She attended the Methodist Church. Lois Marion Kaufman, 89, of Salina, Kansas, and former Wilson, Kansas, resident died on Thursday, January 09, 2020 at the Salina Presbyterian Manor in Salina, Kansas. Lois was born on January 24, 1930, in Kanopolis, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph F. Janda, Jr. and Verna Muriel (Snart) Janda.  She grew up in the Wilson and Kanopolis area and graduated from Wilson High School in 1947.  After high school, she attended Ft. Colleen Kay Walizer, 84, of Russell, Kansas, died on Wednesday, January 08, 2020, at Main Street Manor in Russell, Kansas. Cremation has been selected by the family and a private family service will be held at a later date.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Allen Kent Weimaster, 71, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, January 6, 2020 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. Allen was born October 21, 1948 in Russell, Kansas.  He was the son of Floyd and Berniece (DeWald) Weimaster.  He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School.  He then attended Ft. Hays State University and Kansas State University. Allen served his country in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War.  He was stationed in Okanowa, Japan.  After his tour of duty, he returned to the Russell area for a short time before moving to Denver, Colorado.
